An Apricot Kernel is a single seed found inside the stone of an apricot. It is obtained by cracking the hard stone shell. It looks similar to that of a small almond.
Compound called “amygdalin” – a cyanogenic glucoside, is present in Apricot Kernel which helps in preventing the growth of tumors and may prevent cancer by stopping the cells from reproducing. Laetrile also known as vitamin B-17 is partly a synthetic form of amygdalin. Amygdalin have anti-inflammatory properties and hence it helps in boosting the immune system.
Apricot Kernels have high nutritional and medicinal values and are a great source of vitamin B-17 and vitamin B-15. Vitamin B-17 helps in improving skin and vitamin B-15 helps in treating cancer. They are rich in fiber and so they help in lowering cholesterol and help in the functioning of digestive system organs. They also contain vitamin B1 which helps in lowering the blood pressure and improving the heart health, vitamin A which helps in improving the eyes and vitamin E which helps in improving skin. They contain protein which helps in improving muscle growth and repairing and creating new muscles and tissues in the body, calcium which helps in building bones and iron and phosphorous helps in decreasing tiredness and fatigue. They help in reducing the effect of arthritis and rapid hair loss. They also help in treating bronchitis and emphysema and help in improving the mental health of adults.
One cannot consume more than 5-7 Apricot Kernels per day. Also not advisable for children to eat.
